Girl, Get Your Armor On

The enemy is persistent and he sees the cracks in my armor.  I allow the lies to seep into my soul where they simmer, threatening to boil over and escape through my lips:
  • You are a terrible mother.
  • Nobody cares.  If they did, they would help.
  • It's never going to get better.
  • What do you have to be thankful for?
It's when I hear that last one bouncing around in my head, perching itself to leap off my tongue and escape from my mouth, I realize the enemy has tipped his hand.

That's exactly what he wants me to think.

So I buckle on the belt of truth and pick up my shield of faith and laugh in the face of my defeated foe, for lo his doom is sure.  I fight the lies with thanksgiving:

Continuing to wage war, continuing to count:

holy
experience

588.  I have a Strong Redeemer who pleads my case and demands that the enemy set me free. (Jeremiah 50:33,34)
589.  When I scan the horizon looking for help and see none, I remember--He parted the Red Sea. He made the sun stand still.  He turned water into wine. He restored sight with mud.  He multiplied bread and fish.  He arose from the dead.  When I don't see the solution I remember--God has a much, much bigger imagination than I do and all the resources of His creation at His disposal.
590.  He is mighty to save.
591.  The same God who used evil Assyrians to discipline His people will use anyone or anything as a tool to shape, correct, discipline and shepherd me.
592.  An understanding brother and a place of refuge on a stormy night.
593.  Ethel's willingness to be late to work to be there and to pray.
594.  Godly grandparents who come alongside.
595.  A life-giving invitation to babysit, sit on the floor, and play Zhou-Zhou pets with two of the sweetest little girls.
596.  Laughter that comes from the entire body.
597.  Healing conversations, speaking the gospel again and again and again.
598.  Handwritten note of encouragement.
599.  A seat still available on husband's flight.
600.  Son wanting his Bible and praise music packed for the flight and asking me to pray with and for him.
601.  Good folks at hunting camp willing to invest in young man.
602.  Quiet mornings.
603.  Early Christmas shopping with Ethel.
604.  Friend finishing chemo!
605.  Cannollis fresh from Italian bakery.
606.  The privilege of voting.
607.  Waking to the first snow of the season!

Take that, you pathetic defeated enemy!

Both your words of truth here and #589 made me think of what David wrote in Psalm 143:

The enemy pursues me,
he crushes me to the ground;
he makes me dwell in darkness
like those long dead.
So my spirit grows faint within me;
my heart within me is dismayed.

I remember the days of long ago;
I meditate on all Your works
and consider what Your hands have done.
I spread out my hands to You;
my soul thirsts for You like a parched land.

Psalm 143: 3-6

I can so identify with the lies the enemy throws our way--and so thankful for the Armor!!

thanksgiving as warfare against the enemy...yes, clinging to this truth.

may your heart be encouraged today and may you know only the Truth and none of the lies.

good Word here, friend.

nance, this is so timely for me and i just LOVE your willingness to note, and then change, when you see the enemy lying. that you want to stand up and know that he is god and bigger than you. this is a much-much-needed reminder for me today. love and grace

Loved reading your thankfulness list. It struck me right away with "You're a terrible mother". Oh how Satan seeks to destroy us! THANK YOU for sharing!

Laughter that comes from the entire body - Amen!

@ Jodi: Would love to sit next to you at the banquet, but I'm warning you, I'd probably just get us both into trouble, giggling and throwing my hands up in the air and shouting "hallelujah!" and all that.

@ Leslie: Psalm 143--yes, exactly!

Nancy - oh our enemy is really quite unoriginal but effective. He hits us mothers right where we struggle most to be who God created us to be. Your list of lies could be mine from the last several weeks. Yes, I will buckle up with you and continue to wage the war. Thanking God all the way! Thanks so much for sharing.

Yes, He is mighty to save. Your list makes me want to pay even more attention this week, to hear the Lord speak.

How like satan to attack the very essence of who we are. But he did it with Jesus too. How can we expect any less? I have struggled, as we all do in spiritual warfare. But am learning like you, that as I make a point to give thanks, my eyes are turned to the beauty and Presence of God all around me. Thanks for your wonderful post.
