We all have one, I suppose, a laundry list of things left undone. There are acts of mercy not offered, words of kindness unspoken.
Then there are the list of daily regrets--phone calls not returned, emails deleted without response. Laundry remains unfolded, pantry shelves remain bare, dust piles on furniture, exercise equipment remains unused.
Every autumn I pick more apples than I can slice, cook, freeze, or make into pies. They sit in bags in my garage taunting me, screaming my laziness at me.
And almost every woman I know has unfinished craft projects tucked away in a closet because basket weaving turned out to be much less fun than it looked and quilting is really hard on the fingers.
There is guilt tucked away in those closets, feelings of laziness and shame. We remember the money we wasted and the time spent working on something that will likely never be finished.
A couple of summers ago when cleaning out my mother's house, I came across one of her unfinished craft projects. I remember when she bought the pattern, when my sister and I helped her choose colors of yarn. Had she finished this project, there would be pictures in albums of me with straight, stringy hair parted smack down the middle, and wearing this:
Some things are better left undone.

This is hilarious and graceful. You are killing me!
Hahahaahaa!
Oh Nancy. You stepped on my toes. Then you made me laugh. Thanks.
Then I cried. My grandmother had crocheted granny squares for a quilt she was working on before she passed away. When I found them it was like finding hidden treasure. They smell like her and I can even see her fingers working those hooks when I close my eyes. There are 14 of them. Enough to give one to each daughter, granddaughter, and great-grand which is what we're doing with them this Christmas.
as a knitter who owns a few of those very outdated pattern magazines i love to look at them but i also kind of giggle at "who would wear that?"
this was a sweet and poignant post.
and ahem. i have a fabric stash.
i. don't. sew.
yeah. :)
You're a very funny person : )
But I acutally think you would've been kinda cute in that vest...
this post made me think, reflect on my list of things undone and think i should probably get off of the computer and go do some of them and then you made me laugh out loud (which somehow seems sillier to do when I have no one here to hear me).
Love you and your beautiful way with words! Also can't wait to party with you this afternoon as we "shower" your girl!
hahahaha that's awesome!
Also, on to-do lists: Sometimes I write down things like "eat" and "shower" just so I'm guaranteed to be able to cross something off.
Southern Gal--I LOVE what you're doing with those granny squares!
I needed a laugh tonight. Thanks! And I love the name on the pattern - "Rib Ticklers"
On the serious side there are always things left undone and it is so easy to feel bad about it. I always fool myself into thinking I should be able to accomplish it ALL.
Tomorrow night I'm going to a get together at church called "UFO support group" which stands for Un-finished Objects We are to bring any knitting, craft, scrapbooking etc project that we need a boost on. Fun idea I thought!
