Chili, Interrupted

Yesterday was Chili Cookoff Sunday at my church, and I was going to write about and explain that today.  I wasn't really sure how I was going to tie that into an intro for my gratitude list for this week, although I was sneaking up on a couple of ideas.  Instead, I need to set that aside for another day, throw my hands up in the air, and give public praise to God for the way He met me this morning.

I had one of those mornings I really wasn't looking forward to--a meeting with someone to try to unsnarl a seemingly impossible snarl.  I was unhappy with this person--okay, I was pretty ticked off--and I was afraid of both my reaction and his.  I was afraid of the outcome.

I called, emailed, texted, Facebooked, and cornered every person I could think of to ask for prayer.  For the second time within a very short period I prayed for eyes to see God's presence while walking through a difficult circumstance.  The last time I had prayed in that way, the person with whom my son and I were meeting just-so-happened to mention that he was a deacon in his church and believed God was ultimately in control of the outcome of the situation we were trying to resolve.

Within minutes of walking into my appointment this morning, I heard the receptionist mention that her son had gone on a mission trip with her husband who was the youth group leader in their church.

My loving heavenly Father always, always has His people just where they are needed most.  Why am I so slow to learn this?  A couple of weeks ago, I gave thanks for answered prayer that is so immediate and obvious that it can't be missed.    The delightful KeLi responded:

...oh, yes. i, too, get those "so obvious" prayer answers... i tend to think i am God's equivalent of the problem child in the classroom. He knows those are the only ones i'll comprehend... :)

That pretty much sums up my reaction to this morning's events.  And so, this problem child continues to count, to give thanks.  (And I promise to write about Chili Cook Off later this week--it was a blast!)

holy experience

Our church has a chilli cook-off every year to raise money for missions. I'm looking forward to hearing about yours. Glad you were able to resolve the conflict.

can't wait to hear about chili, but i love hearing about how he meets us, and i love keli's idea of being the socalled problem child... i very often think God is the only one who knows exactly how to get thru my thick skull!

I believe I am a problem child, too!

Thanks for your comment about the hummingbird signs. I have to share this with you -- just got this email about hummingbirds from my sister-in-law a couple of days ago: {I apologize for the length of this comment, but wanted to share this with you!}

I loved your signs blog, and it really spoke to my sister because she has been feeling the same way you have about not knowing what her signs are. She was so relieved when she finally saw one a couple of days ago. She was sitting on the sidewalk with her dog waiting for her kids at the bus stop. She heard something buzzing behind her head and turned to see what kind of bug it was. Instead of a bug, it was a hummingbird hovering right behind her looking right at her! She could see it in fine detail while it stayed long enough for her to get a good look before flying away. Not only is this significant because how often does a hummingbird come that close to a human (especially one sitting next to a dog!), but because my sister has never seen a hummingbird around her house. My Dad loves hummingbirds, and Lara and I gave him and my Mom a hummingbird painting for their anniversary last year. We loved the painting also because it reminded us of when my Dad used to tease us about our finicky eating habits when we were kids by saying that we only wanted to eat hummingbird tongues. So there you go—more evidence that I’m not the only crazy one to see signs.
